Social security within EU

THE THREEFOLD OBJECTIVE

The provisions of Regulation (EEC) No 1408/71 ensure that the application of different national legislation does not adversely affect persons exercising their right to free movement within the European Union by:

guarantying equal treatment of all nationals of Member States under the various national legislations;

ensuring that all necessary periods of insurance, residence and employment are taken into account ("aggregation"): When a migrant worker moves to another Member State, periods completed under the legislation of other countries are taken into account by the competent institution in order to avoid the loss of benefits gained;

guarantying social security benefits for employed and self-employed persons and their family members regardless of their place of employment or of residence.
